Dr. Joe Heck has passionately served the residents of Nevada as a physician, Army Reservist, and community volunteer. Born in New York and raised in Pennsylvania, Joe moved to Southern Nevada in 1992. A 1984 graduate of The Pennsylvania State University with a degree in Health Education, he received his Doctor of Osteopathy from the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine in 1988, and completed a residency in Emergency Medicine at the Albert Einstein Medical Center in 1992. In 1993 he received Board Certification in Emergency Medicine and in 2000 was issued a Certificate of Added Qualification in Emergency Medical Services.

Joe began his 25+ year career in public service as a volunteer firefighter and ambulance attendant in rural Pennsylvania. He volunteered as a Medical Team Manager with the Nevada Urban Search & Rescue Team – Task Force 1, as a member of the LVMPD Search & Rescue team, and as a tactical physician with the LVMPD SWAT team. Called to active duty in 1996 in support of Operation Joint Endeavor and 2003 in support of Operation Noble Eagle, Joe continues to serve in the United States Army Reserve and completed a deployment to Iraq in 2008. He currently holds the rank of Brigadier General and is the Deputy Commander of the 3rd Medical Command overseeing more than 10,000 soldiers across the eastern United States. In July 2006 he graduated from the prestigious U.S. Army War College, earning a Masters of Strategic Studies.


Joe represented Senate District 5 in the Nevada Senate from 2004 through 2008, serving on the Natural Resources, Human Resources and Education, and the Commerce and Labor Committees, and as Vice-Chair of the Transportation and Homeland Security Committee. It was on these committees that Joe best utilized his experiences in education, healthcare, and national security to serve the residents of Nevada. With an undergraduate degree in health education, a faculty appointment at Touro University – Nevada, and prior faculty appointments at Community College of Southern Nevada, University of Nevada School of Medicine, and the Uniformed Services University he understands what it takes to provide a quality education for our children.Joe has worked as a healthcare provider, educator, and administrator, giving him the tools necessary to diagnose and treat Nevada’s ailing healthcare system. His military, federal government, and civilian experiences have provided him with the knowledge and analytical skills required to protect our community, State, and country.

A former small business owner, he was the President and Medical Director of Specialized Medical Operations, Inc., a corporation dedicated to providing quality medical training, consulting, and operational support to Law Enforcement, EMS and Military Special Operations. He has lectured and published widely on special operations medical support, the medical response to acts of terrorism, and emergency preparedness and response. Joe has served as a member of the Nevada State Homeland Security Commission Sub-committee on Health, the American Osteopathic Association’s Task Force on Bioterrorism, as the Medical Director for the Nevada Hospital Association’s Hospital Preparedness program and the Southern Nevada Health District’s Office of Public Health Preparedness.

From 1998 to 2003, Joe served as the Medical Director of the Casualty Care Research Center of the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in Bethesda, Maryland, where he provided medical support for several Federal law enforcement agencies and oversight for the medical response to acts of terrorism.

Joe has been recognized for his service to the community and to the profession of medicine with the following awards:

  • President’s Award – Clark County Medical Society

Joe is a member of the Knights of Columbus Council 13456, American Legion Paradise Post 149, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 36 and Catholic War Veterans Post 1947.

Joe was elected to Congress in November of 2010 and proudly serves the people of Nevada’s Third Congressional District.

Joe and his wife Lisa, a registered nurse, reside in Henderson and have three children: Monica, Chelsea, and Joseph III.
